sudan

Farai Chideya talks to Dan Krauss, the director of The Death of Kevin Carter, an Oscar-nominated documentary about the life, work and suicide of a Pulitzer-prize winning South African photojournalist.

Carter's winning photo shows a heart-breaking scene of a starving child collapsed on the ground, struggling to get to a food center during a famine in the Sudan in 1993. In the background, a vulture stalks the emaciated child.

Carter was part of a group of four fearless photojournalists known as the "Bang Bang Club" who traveled throughout South Africa capturing the atrocities committed during apartheid.

Haunted by the horrific images from Sudan, Carter committed suicide in 1994 soon after receiving the award.

festivals

lina and i went to the annual art festival! it was inspirational to see all the different types of art out there. i liked talking to the artists about their art work and how they came about their creation. my favorite artist was a man who sculpted chinese characters but made the characters look like its meaning.

o yeah, the curly fries were yum!

easter eggs

i decorated eggs with my english corner. i havent done this in so long! at first i thought it would be dorky decorating eggs and having an easter egg hunt with 2 grad students but they had so much fun :). they even took some plastic eggs home so that they could play with their friends, haha. they asked me why we do this as a tradition in america and i didnt have an answer. hart (the one in the middle) went to vox with me after our easter "party" to listen to shane claiborne speak. we got a chance to talk about our faith and what we think about church - it was a good conversation that helped me better understand the meaning and depth of easter.

happy bday xiao!

i spent part of my day-off looking through pictures of italy. i really miss italy.
